I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday.

Christmas Song

Here is a video of a Christmas song. Even though it is more than 30 years old it is still a favourite of many people. The message it tells is to think of others at Christmas who may not be as fortunate as we are.

Maths - Snap

A maths activity we did in groups of 3 helps us learn our bonds to ten.
One person hides 10 linked blocks behind their back and snaps some off. They show the blocks in one hand to the others who have to say how many blocks are still hidden.

Maths

A problem with pencils in the class lead to a question about how many pencils we had at the beginning of the year. We solved the problem using different strategies and some of the students showed the strategy that they used.
Twenty-eight students had eight pencils each so how many pencils were there altogether?
Kaniksta used a place value strategy

Compensating from a tidy number

Andreas worked out multiples of 28 and added them

Today Amelena and Olivia read Ten Sleepy Sloths to the class.
Emily and Franca read Moo La La

GEMS

Today more groups presented to the class about Sunnyhills GEMS.  It was great that we had drama, dance, hand-made posters as well as some digital presentations.

Sunnyhills GEMS

As part of learning about the Sunnyhills GEMS, groups in our class explored what each gem means and made a presentation. Groups chose to present their ideas through dance, drama, posters and digital presentations.
One of the skills we were learning was how to work in a group and get along with others. We had to communicate and compromise.

Two groups presented to the class. See if you can guess which of the GEMS they are describing...

Reading To The Class

Lots of students are enjoying entertaining their classmates by reading to the class. They choose a book and read aloud, using the great reading skills they learn about in class. Here a few photos.

Friday 12 October 2018

We made some art based on the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch barn designs.
Firstly, we used a compass and pencil to draw 3 circles on our paper. Then, after looking at some designs as examples, we made our own designs on the paper and chose colours to decorate. Here are some of the finished works.

New art is on display in our room. Mrs Smith helped the class create to create these rainy day umbrellas. They are made with collage, sponge-painted backgrounds and vivid patterned handles. Come in to have a close look at your child's work!

Madison: Teach The Teacher

On Friday Madison presented her Teach The Teacher to the class. She demonstrated a chemical reaction between some household ingredients. She was assisted by Franca and Emily.

Word Study

Today we revised our learning from last week about homophones: words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings.

Our new learning this week was about synonyms and antonyms.

Science in a van

Today we had a visit from the Science In A Van team. They demonstrated the laws of motion from Sir Isacc Newton and taught us about forces that act on everything. It was very entertaining and we had some great laughs.

Financial Literacy

On Tuesday we had Marlon from the ASB GetWise programme come to talk to us about money. We learned about invisible money, looking for good deals in the supermarket, notes and coins, and needs and wants.

Homonyms

Today we continued our learning journey about homonyms. We were focussing on homophones: words that sound the same but are spelt differently and have different meanings. We matched two words and the pictures that go with them.
